Walter was previously inducted into the Hall of Fame with the Cheerleading Team of 1969 on September 24, 2026. Walter earned his Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. in Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Texas in 1968. He and his future wife, Carol Ann James met while attending The University of Texas and were married for 60 years. Walter served as a Mechanical Engineering faculty member for over 45 years at the Colorado School of Mines, Texas A&M University, and Baylor University, achieving tenure by the age of 27. He was an internationally recognized professor who pioneered work in metallurgy, composite materials, polymers, and natural composites. Walter advised 41 M.S. theses and 17 Ph.D. dissertations, with his former students making significant contributions at universities and industries across the country.
At the same time, Walter was a leading voice on the connections between faith and science. He spoke at hundreds of universities across the U.S. and coauthored the seminal book The Mystery of Life's Origin, which remains in publication today. He was also one of the founding professors of Campus Crusade for Christ's (CRU) Faculty Commons ministry, pioneering ways for faculty to effectively share their Christian faith on college campuses.
After retiring from Baylor,
Walter and Ann relocated to Georgetown, TX, where they continued to speak at
conferences and teach in local churches. Walter and Ann were not ones to sit
still for long; they traveled extensively and regularly entertained visitors at
their home.
