SNIPPETS OF LIFE - BEFORE AND BEYOND ROY MILLER

FROM THE HALL —
ROY MILLER HIGH SCHOOL FABULOUS 60’s ⚓
Roy Miller High School, Corpus Christi, Texas
Class of 1960–1969 Alumni • Life Stories • Hall of Fame

SNIPPETS OF LIFE

This is a special place within the Fab 60’s Hall of Fame —
where our alumni share the journeys that followed our days at Roy Miller.

Here, memories are preserved, experiences are honored,
and the paths we have traveled are recorded for all to see.

It is a place where classmates leave their written legacies —
stories of life, growth, service, and the moments that shaped who we became.

Together, these stories form a living record…
a reminder that while Roy Miller was our beginning,
the chapters that followed are just as meaningful.

Hal Carew -
I ran into Snuffy (James Creighton) in CC at lunch while in town working, maybe 15-20 years ago. He was very adamant about me stopping by his house to see all his RMHS memorabilia…
I explained that I was very busy, and really couldn’t make it… When I saw the look on his face, I realized that I HAD to make it.
Spent 3 hours visiting and seeing his collection of CC and RMHS treasures… A Great day for the 2 of us… Tears in our eyes as I departed

HAL JAY '65
TRIBUTE TO HAL JAY

Hal Jay recounts his own story on his Face Book page for all to enjoy. What a great story Hal, you truly are a success story and we applaud and salute you our Classmate. Hal was also a member of the 1963-64 Roy Miller football team.

I Graduated from Roy Miller High School in 1965.  I attended Del Mar College in Corpus for one year and then transferred to Texas A&I University.  I joined Sigma Chi Fraternity my first semester there.  I met a girl in Chemistry class, her name was Paula and was attracted to her.  We got pinned several months later and married in 1969.  We moved all over the country in the early years, Alabama, Illinois, Florida, Arizona and finally moved back to Texas for good.

I started my company in 1994 and have not looked back.  A fact that will Surprise my classmates, and certainly my teachers, at Miller is that I served on the Fort Bend Independent School District as a board member for six years.  I have two of the most beautiful daughters in the world, Tiffany and Tara, and that is topped off by the world's most awesome grand-children, Mason, Hailey, and Henry.  This old boy from the west-side of Corpus married above himself.  My lovely bride of 49 years and I have taken a real liking to travel.

CHRISTINA D TORRES '69
TRIBUTE TO CHRISTINA

Chris recounts her story on a Comment in the Fab 60s Group for us to enjoy.

In 1967 I was a Sophomore and walked to school like many others in hot days, cold days, and yes rainy & windy days as well. Sometimes we were lucky and rides with friends. My Junior year I enrolled in the NYC program and worked as a tutor after school at Lamar Elementary School. My Dear Grandfather got me a nice aqua blue Mercury Comet to get me to school and work. By my Senior year my parents bought a house in the Foy Moody High School District; however, I did not want to go to Moody at all.

Everyone in my family had graduated from Miller, and I wanted to be a part of that tradition. We had so much pride in our school the Miller Spirit the bonds and memories with friends. I couldn't give all that up and I wouldn't - I loved Miller. My Dear Grandfather told my parents that because I was a hard worker they were give me an early graduation present, a car so I could drive to Miller. Mind you I could have walked and gotten to Moody in less than 10 minutes but no it was Roy Miller for me!

My present was a beautiful Chevrolet Chevelle SS all black leather interior had black vinyl top and charcoal gray bottom. I loved that car and wish I still had it. I also gave rides to my friends and continued going to the Miller football games at home and out of town even after we graduated. I'm thankful that my beloved "Grandpa" made this all possible for me. I miss him. He was the kindest most generous man. πŸ˜₯❤️ I found pictures to show exactly how my cars looked. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter with family and friends. Easter Blessings to all. ❤️

ROSE DE LEON '63
DEFINA "FINA" BROOKS '64

HALL OF SNIPPETS WANTS TO KNOW - WHO CARRIED YOUR BOOKS

Rose De Leon - Nope, No One - I carried my own books to/from home to school. As far as crushes, sure, I had 2 boys I really liked. But the only one that knew about it was my best friend (Marta). Those really were the days! Everything was so innocent. Famous last words, “if I knew then what I know now “. As the saying says, QUE SERA SERA. OH, and who remembers passing notes to your friends? Luckily I never got caught.

Delfina Brooks - I actually was fortunate enough to have one or two boys carry my books home but he had to depart before Baldwin Blvd cuz I wasn’t allowed to have boyfriends. These weren’t “boyfriends” but I wouldn’t have convinced my mom otherwise. For the life of me, I don’t know who those boys were.

DELFINA BUSTAMANTE BROOKS ‘64

A SNIPPET OF MY LIFE – WHAT A NAME

PART 1 - INTRODUCTION

My name at birth is Delfina Bustamante.  I was named after my mom’s maternal aunt, Delfina Salazar; a woman who took in my mom and her four siblings because they were orphaned as very young children.  Their Tia Delfina was as poor as they come; she was widowed, had a son, and had no work, but she still took in the five siblings and moved to Crystal City TX, and she managed to raise them until they married.

I was born in 1946, and already had dozens of first cousins, most of whom lived in Ohio.  Out of all those cousins, I was the only one named after Tia Delfina.   So, what does this all mean and what does it matter?  My first and last names are strange, different, weird, and as a kid and many years thereafter, I hated my name, Delfina; I truly hated my name.  I wanted a name that other girls had.  Why couldn’t I have been named Lucy, Mary Jane, Lydia, Gloria, or Yolanda, Libby, or Mary Ester, etc., etc?  There were so many pretty names at Austin Elementary, many of those names belonged to my friends.  But no!!  I was Delfina.

PART 2 – I LIKE MY NAME

When I was at Ella Barnes Jr High, there was a boy named Delfino.  I don’t think I had any classes with him in my three years there, I never had a conversation with him, and I know, “I did not want to know him.”  It was so embarrassing to me that he was a boy and he had my name.  I avoided that boy if we were ever in the same area.  I avoided him the whole time at Barnes.  I don’t know if he went to Miller but I don’t remember worrying about any boy having my name while I was in high school.

Somewhere along the way in my life, I started appreciating my name.  And the reason I liked it; was for the very same reason I had hated it; I liked it because very few people had my name.  Go figure!  My nickname at home and most those who knew me outside of school, knew me as Fina.  When I started working at SSA in 1965, a fellow worker called me, Delfinia, and I tried correcting him for a couple of weeks, until I gave up.  I’m also known as Delfie, Del, Delphine, Lady D, Delphi, and once, as I was being scolded (in jest), I was called “Delpha!!”  We laughed a lot over “Delpha.” Of course, I’m also known as Honey, Mom and Meemo; but mostly it’s Delfina.

PART 3 - PARTING

One last thing.  Many years ago I was at the Houston airport getting my ticket.  The man who was helping me said, “it’s a good thing you didn’t marry me.”  I kind of jerked my head and asked, “What?”  He pointed to his name tag that said “Mr. Delfino,” and he said, “If you had married me, your name would’ve been Delfina Delfino!”  Oh my gosh, we had a great laugh over that.

If anyone knows Delfino MartΓnez, who attended Ella Barnes Jr High in the late 50’s, please tell him I owe him an apology.  Hahaha!  I’m sure he has no clue that I avoided him for three whole years just because of his name, so maybe he could use a good laugh.
