WELCOME TO THE HALL OF BUCCANEER BANDS
⚓ BEFORE THE GREAT BUCCANEER BANDS OF THE 60’S… THERE
WAS THIS GROUP OF YOUNG MUSICIANS WHO STARTED IT ALL
PRESENTING THE FIRST BUCCANEER BAND OF 1930

yearbook that shows a picture of the first Buccaneer Band! ⚓
It was an idea whose time had come,
the brain child of Arthur Harris. He wanted to bring spirited band music to
football games. Imagine… almost 100 years ago, football games in Corpus Christi
were first graced by the uplifting sound of live band music echoing across the
field by the band that would later become the Corpus Christi High School — and
eventually Roy Miller High School — Buccaneer Band.
It was 1930 when the newly formed
“Bandits” Band first performed at Corpus Christi football games, and
considering it was their very first year, they did exceptionally well. The
“Bandits” not only performed at the games, but also appeared at many special
occasions throughout the community.
Besides members from the High School,
the band also included talented young musicians from Junior High who were
already being recognized as promising material for an even larger and better
“Bandits” Band in the years ahead.
Sadly, Corpus Christi yearbooks known
as “La Gaviota” from 1931 through 1941 are non-existent on Classmates.com. It
would have been wonderful to see how the band evolved during those years — the
uniforms, twirlers, traditions, and growing pageantry. Better yet, imagine actually
being there would surely have been nostalgic indeed!
By 1942, school traditions had grown
considerably for example, Favorites were designated as “Most Beautiful” and
“Most Handsome,” along with Best All-Around Girl and Boy and several runner-up
honors. Cheerleaders were then known as “Yell Leaders” and in 1942 included two
boys and four girls.
And as for the Buccaneer Band — by
1942 it had grown into an organization of more than 175 members under Drum
Major DeWitt McGee, and included three separate bands - Concert Band “A,”
Concert Band “B,” and the Marching Band.
From those early “Bandits” beginnings
came the proud musical traditions that was to become an integral part of the
Roy Miller Buccaneer legacy ⚓
